The function of the axon is to transmit information to different neurons, muscles, and glands.

The nerve fibers with long axons are myelinated. The axis cylinder of the myelinated nerve fibres has two sheaths. Myelinated fibres show nodes and internodes. The myelinated nerve fibers appear white in color.

Myelinated axon diagram

The axons of normal myelinated nerve fibers have a pale axoplasm in which there are both neurofilaments and microtubules, as well as occasional profiles of mitochondria and smooth endoplasm reticulum (Figs. 3.1 , 3.2, 3.3 and Fig. 3.3A). Surrounding the axons are the myelin sheaths, which occur in segmental lengths and are formed by Myelinated Axons. In order to allow rapid conduction of electrical signals through a neurone and make them more energy-efficient certain neuronal axons are covered by a myelin sheath. The myelin sheath surrounds the axon to form an insulating layer.

Characteristics. Most neurons have only one axon; Transmit information away from  Neuron in the central nervous system: This neuron diagram also shows the oligodendrocyte, myelin sheath, and nodes of Ranvier. Figure 2.8: Cuprizone-induced demyelination in the corpus callosum of a mouse   The Myelin Sheath of a neuron consists of fat-containing cells that insulate the axon from electrical activity. This insulation acts to increase the rate of  Figure 3.1 shows a schematic diagram of an axon and the charge distributions Propagation of action potentials in myelinated fibers is illustrated in Figure 3.4.

1. Introduktion

Much like the rubber coating on an electrical cord, the myelin sheath insulates and protects the axon of the nerve cell as well as conducts the electrical impulse 2004-01-01 · Figure 1.1A is a diagram of a teased myelinated PNS axon observed and drawn by Ramon y Cajal (Ramon y Cajal, 1928). Myelinated axons are required in cells where quick response is required.

• Recall that myelinated axons have areas of insulation interrupted by areas of bare axon called nodes of Ranvier. • In a myelinated axon, charge flows across the membrane only at the nodes, so an action potential is generated only at the nodes. The action potential appears to jump along the axon.
